Dr. Roumena Georgieva is an accomplished violinist with an international reputation. At the age of 23, she won a concertmaster position with the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra. She also held the position of concertmaster and soloist with the Ladies’ Chamber Orchestra, and toured many times with both orchestras in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Russia, and other countries. She has numerous performances with the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Varna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Russe Philharmonic Orchestra and other major symphony orchestras. As a soloist, she has toured and performed in Rome, Milan, Berlin, Leipzig, Thessalonica, and other cities. Since her arrival in the United States, she has performed as Assistant Concertmaster with the Northbrook Symphony Orchestra and the Lake Shore Symphony Orchestra in Chicago, the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, the Paducah Symphony Orchestra in Paducah, Kentucky, the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra, and as a Concertmaster with the Georgia State University Symphony Orchestra in Atlanta. She has been a member of many chamber ensembles including The String Quartet of the State Academy of Music, Bulgaria, The String Quartet of the National Radio Symphony Orchestra of Bulgaria, The String Quartet of the New Conservatory of Thessalonica, Greece, and The Violin Duo, Piano Quartet, and neoPhonia New Music Trio Ensemble at Georgia State University. Her solo recitals with piano include recent performances at Lake Forest College in Chicago, Georgia State University, Spelman College and Reinhardt College in Atlanta. Her performances in 2004 and 2006 with the Spelman College Glee Club have been seen on broadcast television. Upcoming performances in 2007 include a Chamber Recital in the historic Sisters Chapel at Spelman College, and a Solo Recital at Clark Atlanta University.
Her career as a performer is combined with a distinguished teaching career. Dr. Georgieva started teaching violin in 1978 as an Adjunct Professor at the State Academy of Music in Sofia, Bulgaria, and continued to join the faculty until 1990. The same year she accepted a position at the New Conservatory of Thessalonica, Greece, which was the starting point of her international recognition as a violin professor. Since arriving at United States she taught at Elmhurst College in Chicago, at Spelman College, Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta. In 2005, Dr. Georgieva received an invitation to become Director of the Atlanta University Center Wide Symphony Orchestra in Atlanta. She also currently teaches violin, viola, and chamber music at Spelman College, Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University.
Dr. Georgieva’s awards include the prestigious Grand Prize for Young Bulgarian Violinists, First Prize in the “P. Vladigerov” National Competition for voice and instrument, Special Prize in the National Chamber Competition, and First Prize in orchestra competition for Bulgarian Music Performance.
Her solo repertoire includes violin concertos of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruch, Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Mozart No. 1,2,3,4,5, Lalo, Paganini,No.1,2,4, Prokofiev No.2, Schumann, Shostakovich No.1 and Tchaikovsky.
Dr. Georgieva holds a DMA from the State Academy of Music, Sofia, Bulgaria, a Master of Music Performance from Georgia State University, and a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the Professional School of Music in Sofia, Bulgaria. She received an additional specialization at the master classes with Yehudi Menuhin, Henryk Szering, David Oistrach, Leonid Cogan, Sergei Krilov, Vladimir Spivakov, Shlomo Minz, Niccolas Szabadi, and William Pruicil.
