The Spelman College music department is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music, the accrediting body for music programs in higher education. The department has an active chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society.
Since the early days of Spelman College, music has played an integral part in the lives of the students. Provisions have always been made for students to cultivate their interests and talents in vocal and instrumental music. More importantly, an academic music program has existed at Spelman since the turn of the century.
Today, the Spelman College music department offers a strong, diverse, academic program maintained around the principles of excellence and relevance, and leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. The program is designed to provide students with the basic skills common to all musicians. It is also designed to give students a strong foundation for graduate study leading to a career in music.
The music department offers students the opportunity to pursue a double major including music, or the option of a minor in music.
Through its performing ensembles, its general music courses open to all students, and its series of concerts for the whole community, the music department plays an integral role in the life of Spelman College.
