A Letter from Dr. Kevin Johnson

The Department of Music at Spelman College has a long history of excellence and is dedicated to delivering quality music education to all its students. The Department of Music at Spelman College is a place where faculty, students, and guests receive an “Education for Life”. We are more than just an academic department, we are a family. It is my goal as the chair of the department to encourage all of us to maintain an environment of collegiality, honesty, and hard work. We are all passing through this place on a mission to make a better life for ourselves. Let us not get bogged down with things that do not really matter. Instead, let us celebrate the opportunity for growth that God gives to each of us on a daily basis.

We are the ambassadors for Spelman College. We are creative, energized people who love to learn. We are built to teach women of color. We are an All-Steinway school. We are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. We are on the cutting edge of instructional technology. We are a nationally and internationally recognized faculty. We are a department with a faculty to student ratio amongst the lowest in the nation. We are proud of our graduates. We are a department with high-fidelity surround sound in every classroom. We are Pro Tools recording capable in every classroom. We are the world-renowned Spelman College Glee Club. We are graduating seniors who consistently score well above average on the Music Field Test. We are Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity for Women, Inc. since 1979. We are Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society since 1974. We are overcoming our shortcomings and capitalizing on our strengths. We are many more things but this is just a start.
